Mahlkönig Grind-by-Sync: The Technology Redefining Espresso Grinding

For years, baristas have manually adjusted their grinders - often several times a day - to keep up with changes in temperature, humidity, beans, and bar pressure. Now, Mahlkönig introduces a major leap forward: Grind-by-Sync, a technology that connects the grinder and espresso machine so they can work together as one intelligent system.

This isn’t just a new feature. It’s a shift in how workflow, quality, and consistency can be managed across cafés, teams, and entire chains.

What is Grind-by-Sync?

Grind-by-Sync combines Mahlkönig’s precision engineering with cloud-based communication and an algorithm that automatically adjusts the grind based on data from the espresso machine. When the machine records the brew time of the last shot, it sends this information to the grinder via the cloud. The grinder then compares it to the target brew time and electronically adjusts the burr distance to hit that target with precision.

In short: The machine brews. The grinder learns. Your workflow stays in sync.

How does the algorithm work?

The system collects multiple data points from the espresso machine and uses them to fine-tune the grinder:

  • Brew time

  • Recipe ID

  • Group head number

  • Ground weight and particle size


By the time the next shot is ready, the grinder can automatically compensate for any deviation -meaning fewer variations, less stress on staff, and dramatically improved consistency.
